A random thought: I love superhero comics, but not every comic needs to have superpowers in it.
It seems a done thing is to put superheroes in your - otherwise perfectly interesting-sounding - books but don’t act like they’re superheroes. Post apocalyptic drama sound a bit dull? Give someone telekinesis and make them immortal. Or if your intergalactic womanising swashbuckler with a pirate for a mum is for some reason not interesting enough a premise on its own, just make him Wolverine.
Naturally, it is particularly frustrating for someone trying to put together pitches for comics without super-powered protagonists to see that characters that are mobsters/pirates/soldiers/pop stars/royals are for some reason not deemed interesting by the marketplace, but as a reader, it’s also galling to see all these really inventive worlds and alternate histories being built by interesting and intelligent writers, and then they go and plop an X-Man or two in the middle of the whole thing Because Comics.
Bear in mind, of course, that this is coming from a guy who’s only ever drawn one single graphic novel for a legit publisher, and so clearly does not comprehend the demands of the marketplace, so expect to see my attempt at a superhero comic in the near future, because damn do I love money and being able to eat.
